What is PCOD?
What is PCOD?
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a common hormonal condition affecting women of reproductive age, in which the ovaries produce multiple immature eggs that develop into small cysts. These cysts interfere with the normal functioning of the ovaries, leading to irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalance, and metabolic disturbances.
Women with PCOD may experience symptoms such as missed or delayed periods, weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth, and difficulty conceiving.
The condition is commonly associated with insulin resistance, where the body is unable to effectively use insulin, leading to increased blood sugar levels and hormonal disruptions. Over time, this can contribute to complications like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues.
According to Ayurveda, PCOD is linked to an imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas, along with impaired digestion (Agni) and toxin accumulation (Ama). These imbalances block the reproductive channels (Artavavaha Srotas), affecting ovulation and menstrual health.
Difference Between PCOD and PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder characterized by excess androgen (male sex hormone) levels, irregular ovulation, and metabolic disturbances. It commonly causes irregular periods, weight gain, acne, and difficulty in conceiving, and may or may not involve ovarian cysts.
Although PCOD and PCOS are commonly used interchangeably, key differences include:
- Condition scope: PCOD mainly affects ovarian function, whereas PCOS is a broader hormonal and metabolic disorder impacting multiple body systems.
- Severity: PCOD is usually milder and manageable, while PCOS is more severe and long-term.
- Ovulation pattern: Ovulation may still occur in PCOD, but is absent or irregular in PCOS.
- Hormonal impact: PCOS involves higher androgen levels and insulin resistance compared to PCOD.
- Fertility: PCOD may cause mild fertility issues, whereas PCOS is more strongly associated with infertility.
In Ayurveda, PCOS is considered a deeper systemic imbalance involving Kapha, Vata, and impaired Agni, requiring more intensive correction.
Causes and Risk Factors of PCOD
Causes and Risk Factors of PCOD
PCOD develops due to a combination of hormonal, genetic, and lifestyle factors that disturb normal ovarian function and metabolism. Identifying these causes is essential for effective Ayurvedic PCOD treatment in Ahmedabad at SGVP Holistic Hospital. Common causes and risk factors include:
- Hormonal imbalance: Excess androgen levels disrupt ovulation and menstrual cycles.
- Insulin resistance: Reduced insulin sensitivity leads to increased fat storage and hormonal imbalance.
- Genetics: Family history increases susceptibility to PCOD.
- Unhealthy diet: High intake of processed and sugary foods affects metabolism.
- Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity contributes to weight gain and hormonal issues.
- Obesity: Excess body weight worsens insulin resistance and symptoms.
- Chronic stress: Stress negatively impacts hormonal regulation.
- Inflammation: Low-grade inflammation may trigger androgen production.
In Ayurveda, PCOD is caused by Kapha dosha imbalance (leading to cyst formation and sluggish metabolism), along with Vata imbalance (affecting ovulation and cycle regularity).
Symptoms of PCOD
PCOD symptoms may vary among women and commonly affect menstrual cycles, skin, and metabolism. Common symptoms include:
- Irregular periods: Delayed, missed, or infrequent menstrual cycles are common.
- Heavy bleeding: Some women may experience prolonged or excessive menstrual flow.
- Weight gain: Unexplained weight gain, especially around the abdomen, is frequently seen.
- Acne issues: Persistent acne and oily skin occur due to hormonal imbalance.
- Excess hair: Increased facial or body hair growth, known as hirsutism, is a common symptom.
- Hair thinning: Gradual thinning or hair loss from the scalp may occur.
- Skin changes: Dark patches may appear on the neck, underarms, or groin areas.
- Fertility issues: Difficulty conceiving may occur due to irregular ovulation.
- Mood changes: Anxiety, stress, and mood swings may be present.
In Ayurveda, PCOD symptoms like heaviness, weight gain, and cyst formation tend to occur due to Kapha imbalance, and irregular periods and disturbed ovulation are caused by Vata imbalance.

Here in the ritual of Pancha Karma the way Vaidha Pravin Sir Ayurveda explains something different noble thought in us. And when the ceremony starts with them, Vaidya Drashti Ma’am’s regular fellow’s understanding method is so good that it is as if during the whole ceremony he explains our every problem very well. They also do yoga classes and music and what about cleaning, the atmosphere is like Gokul Vrindavan Dham. This seems to be better than the hospital. Ahmedabad best Ayurveda Hospital 😊

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ayurveda cure PCOD permanently?
Ayurveda focuses on long-term management of PCOD rather than an instant cure. It works by correcting hormonal imbalance, improving digestion, and balancing Kapha and Vata doshas. With regular treatment, detox therapies, and lifestyle changes, many women experience regulated menstrual cycles, improved ovulation, and long-term relief from PCOD symptoms without dependence on hormonal medications.
Can Ayurveda improve fertility in women with PCOD?
Yes, Ayurveda can significantly improve fertility in women with PCOD by restoring natural ovulation, balancing hormones, and strengthening reproductive tissues. Herbs like Shatavari and therapies such as Panchakarma enhance uterine health and improve egg quality, thereby increasing the chances of natural conception in a safe and holistic manner.
How long does Ayurvedic treatment for PCOD take?
The duration of Ayurvedic PCOD treatment varies depending on severity, age, and lifestyle factors. Some women notice improvement in menstrual regularity within a few months, while chronic cases may take longer. Consistency in medicines, diet, and lifestyle modifications is essential for achieving stable and long-lasting results.
What diet is recommended in Ayurvedic PCOD treatment?
An Ayurvedic PCOD diet focuses on light, warm, and freshly prepared foods that improve digestion and reduce Kapha imbalance. Whole grains, green vegetables, lentils, and spices like turmeric and cumin are recommended. Processed, sugary, and oily foods are avoided as they worsen hormonal imbalance and metabolic issues.
Can PCOD come back after Ayurvedic treatment?
PCOD may return if unhealthy habits, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and high stress levels, are resumed. Ayurveda addresses the root cause of the condition, which lowers recurrence risk. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular physical activity, and stress management is essential for long-term results and hormonal balance.
Can Ayurveda and allopathy be taken together for PCOD?
Yes, Ayurvedic and Allopathic treatments can be combined safely under proper medical supervision. Allopathy helps control immediate symptoms, while Ayurveda works on correcting hormonal imbalance and addressing root causes. This integrative approach provides better symptom control, improved reproductive health, and better long-term outcomes for PCOD management.
