    Understanding ECG

    Understanding ECG

An electrocardiogram, also known as ECG or EKG, is a quick non-invasive diagnostic test that provides insights into the electrical activity of the heart. It is painless, quick, and cost-effective, and is used to check the heartbeat.

During each heartbeat, an electrical impulse travels through the heart which causes the heart muscle to contract and pump blood. An ECG records these impulses and presents them as waves on a screen or printed on paper.

ECG test centres play an important role in the early detection, diagnosis, and management of heart diseases. It can be standalone diagnostic labs and part of multi-speciality hospitals. It is performed by trained technicians or nurses, and cardiologists or physicians interpret the results.

    Why Is An ECG Done?

    Why Is An ECG Done

An ECG is done to check the heartbeat and shows how fast or slow the heart is beating.

    • A previous heart attack
    • Irregular heartbeats, called arrhythmias
    • Cause of chest pain that may show signs of blocked or narrowed heart arteries.
    • Enlarged heart chamber
Poor blood supply to the heart
    • Electrolyte imbalances
    • Chest pain
    • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or confusion
    • Pounding or fluttering heartbeat
    • Shortness of breath
    • Weakness or fatigue
    • Reduced ability to exercise
    • Family history of heart disease
    • Detect life-threatening conditions early
    • Guide timely interventions and treatments
    • Monitor effectiveness of medications and ongoing treatments
    • Evaluate surgical outcomes
    • Serve as baseline diagnostics during routine health check-ups

    Principles Of ECG

    Principles Of ECG

The ECG test records the electrical impulses that initiate every heartbeat. These impulses cause the muscles of the heart to contract and relax in a synchronised manner, allowing the heart to pump blood effectively.

The ECG machine records this activity as a graph, showing various waves, P wave, the QRS complex, and the T wave that represent different phases of the heart’s electrical cycle. These waveforms help in evaluating the heart’s rhythm, rate, and overall function.

    Types Of ECG

There are several types of ECGs used depending on the patient’s symptoms, frequency of irregularities, or the duration for which monitoring is needed:

    • Resting ECG: It is the standard ECG done while lying down. It is routinely used for diagnostic purposes in hospital settings.
    • Stress ECG: It is performed while walking on a treadmill and measures the heart’s response to physical activity.
    • Several portable ECGs are used if a regular ECG is not able to detect a change in the heartbeat. It includes:
      • Holter monitor: It is a small, portable ECG device that can be worn for a day or more to record the heart’s activity.
      • Event monitor: It is like a Holter monitor that records only at certain times for a few minutes at a time. It can be worn for 30 days, and a button can be pushed when an individual feels symptoms.

ECG Procedure at SGVP Holistic Hospital in Ahmedabad

At SGVP Holistic Hospital, ECG tests are conducted under the supervision of trained technicians and interpreted by experienced cardiologists.

    • Before Procedure: A member of our healthcare team may shave the hair on the area where the electrode patches are placed. Also, patients will be guided to remove any jewellery or metal objects.
    • During Procedure:
      • The technician may attach up to 12 sticky patches called electrodes to the chest and sometimes to the arms or legs. The wires connect the patches to a computer.
      • The ECG machine will record the electrical activity of the heart for a few minutes.
      • The results are displayed as a graph.
    • After Procedure: You may return to your daily activities after having an electrocardiogram unless you have a heart problem that needs immediate treatment.
    • Post-test interpretation: Our on-site physician will review the results and send them to a remote cardiologist. An ECG may give results about the heart rate, heart rhythm, heart attack, blood and oxygen supply to the heart, and heart structure changes.

SGVP Holistic Hospital offers a comprehensive and individualized approach for diagnosing and treating different cardiac conditions. If the ECG results show abnormal results, our cardiac team suggests the appropriate medication, a procedure, or surgery.
